Why is my baby so gassy?
In most infant, gas is simply caused by swallowing air while feeding. Othertimes, though, it can be sensitives that could be affected by breastfeeding mom's diet or a certain type of formula.
If your baby is gassy you will notice that baby passes a lot of gas and seems to feel better afterward. Gas troubles often start when babies are just a couple of week old.
Infants are usually gassy because they have immature digestive system and swallow air during feedings. Some babies may have sensitivities that could be affected by a breastfeeding mom's diet or a certain type of formula.
Gassy baby signs and symptoms
Babies are naturally gassy, but we can take preventive measures to keep your little one comfortable.
New parents are often surprised at the big noises that come out of a small baby. If you suspect that your fussy baby is genuinely uncomfortable, and they keep squirming and pulling up their legs, they might have some gas that refuses to pass.
Like, we have all had gas pain. Crampy feeling we get when a gas bubble is trying to work its way through our digestive system.
But there are a few common signs of a gassy baby you can look out for:-
- Red-faced
- Crying
- Squirming post-feeding
- Clenched fists
- Pulling legs up toward the tummy
- Passing gas
Gassy baby causes
Generally, when baby is suffering from gas, the stomach is inflated with air, which has either occurred from the digestion process or baby has swallowed a lot of air while feeding.
There are some causes for gas:-
- Drinking too quickly
- Drinking too slowly
- Drinking formula with air bubbles
- Crying for extened periods
- Ingesting gas-inducing foods
- Not tolerating a formula well

"I love you" Tummy Rub
You may have heard about the I love you massage, which some nurses teach new moms before they leave the hospital . Lie your baby down on her back, then start rubbing her tummy in a circular motion and mimic writing the letters "l", "L" and "U" with two or three fingers across her belly. By "spelling" the words across your baby's tummy in a smooth morion, you are essentially triggering activity in the abdomen that can speed up the process for baby to pass trapped gas bubbles.
Burp, Burp, Burp
The cure -all for practically every fussy baby moment can be a good burp. Sometimes just one will do the trick. Burping her. If it doesn't happen right away, lay her down for a few minutes and then gently pick her up and try again.
Little Remedies to the Rescue
Gas pain can be triggered by thinks like colic, so products like gas relief drops or gripe water. Gripe water a mixture of water and various herbs.
- Take 1 tsp of hing (asafoetida) and mix it with 1 tsp of ghee. Heat it till lukewarm. The formulation could be applied on the child's stomach four to five times a day till he gets complete relief. This is particularly help in stomach ache.
