What is Pacifier or Soother ?


  Pacifier is rubber, plastic or silicon nipple substitute given to an infant. Pacifiers normally have three parts, an elongated teat, a mouth shield, and a handle. 


Is pacifier good for babies? 

Babies IQ learn to suck when they are in the womb. Sucking helps the baby get  nutrition apart from comforting them. Some babies love to suck their fingers or thumbs, whereas some enjoy sucking pacifiers. 

What is the purpose of a pacifier ?

Some babies are happiest when they are sucking on something. A pacifier offers temporary distraction. A pacifier might come in handy during and after shots, blood tests or other procedures. A pacifier might help your baby fall asleep.

What age are pacifier for ?

Pacifier can be given from birth to any age. You can even start giving your little one a pacifier if he or she is already 3 months or even 6 months old.


Can we give pacifier to newborn ?

Pacifiers are safe for your newborn. 

Every child is different, with unique needs and abilities. Some babies can go back and forth between breastfeeding and a pacifier without any problems, while pacifiers may pose some challenges for others. Some of the concerns about pacifier use like of nipple confusion, breast refusal, and low milk supply are only relevant for breastfed babies.

Pros of Pacifier

  • Pacifiers are helpful during travel on an airplane as sucking can relieve painful pressure in the middle ear.
  • Premature babies may particularly benefit from pacifier use, one study showed that giving preemies pacifiers resulted in a quicker sucking success and transition to oral feeding.
  • Many babies have a need to suck even when they are not hungry, a pacifier can satisfy this desire for non-nutritive sucking.
Cons of Pacifier

  • The overuse of a pacifier during the day from getting the day could prevent your baby from getting enough milk at daytime feedings, which can cause them to wake more often during the night to eat.
  • A systematic literature review found moderate evidence that pacifier use was associated with poor dental development, specifically anterior open bite and posterior crossbite.
  • Pacifiers have been linked with ear infection, which is why the AAP recommends limiting or eliminating the pacifier after 6 months of age.
