Burping, Burping Position and Pictures

An important part of feeding baby is burping. Burping helps to get rid of some of the air that babies tend to swallow during feeding. Not being burped often and swallowing too much air can make a baby spit up, or seem cranky or gassy. A burp or belch can help ease an upset stomach.

Its very common.

Though it may be unpleasant for you and those around you, Burping is a completely natural way to get rid of air swallowed during eating and drinking. It's also known as belching or eructation. Burping keeps your stomach from expanding too much from swallowed air.

This is completely normal occurrence that helps to rid your abdomen of excess air. It is normal for a healthy person to burp up to 30 times a day. But acid reflux may cause you to burp more often. One of the reasons for an increase in burping is because acid reflux increases swallowing.

How to Burp Your Baby ?

When burping your baby, repeated gentle patting on your baby's back should do the trick. Cup your hand while patting-this is gentler on the baby than a flat palm. To prevent messy cleanups when your baby spits up or has a 'wet burp', you might want to place a towel or bib under your baby's chin or on your shoulder.

Burping Position and Pictures

  • Over your shoulder. With your baby's chin resting on your shoulder, support the head and shoulder area with one hand, and gently rub and pat your baby's back.
  • Sitting on you lap. Sit your baby on your lap facing away from you.
  • Lying across your lap.
In all positions, it is important to support the baby's head and neck if the baby is a newborn without good head control.

If the baby fights burping, do not force them into the position.

If the baby falls asleep after feeding, try positioning them on the parent's chest or shoulder and rocking them to keep them in an upright position as they sleep.

How long to burp a baby ?

There is no specific time frame to burp, some babies may not burp at all.

Is it ok to leave baby without burping ?

Take heart that when sleepy babies feed, they're usually so relaxed that they are likely to intake extra air. If you find that he isn't fussy, wiggly, or restless at wake-up time, he may not need to burp each tie. In short, its okay to put him to sleep without burping.

How do you burp a baby that won't burp ?

If he won't burp, try patting him more firmly with your whole palm, as light pats may not be effective. Another option is to pat his bottom. Many parents swear this is the only way to get their babies to burp . If patting doesn't work, see if rubbing his back does the trick.

Can baby sleep in burping position ?

Babies can keep sleeping in this cozy position while the pressure from your shoulder pushes on their tummy to release gas. Keep a burp rag over your shoulder if your baby tends to spit up.
