What is Proverbs ?

 "A short well known sentence or phrase that gives advice or says that

something is generally true in life" or  "A brief popular saying that gives advice about how people should live or that expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true .

Or

"A proverb is a short, pithy saying that expresses a traditionally held truth or piece of advice, based on common sense or experience .


Why do we use Proverbs ?

"To teach and educate the audience."

The most important function of proverbs is to teach and educate the audience. They often contain expert advice, with a role for educating the readers on what they may face if they do something. Since proverbs are usually metaphorical and indirect, they allow writers to express their messages in a less harsh way. 


Here we will discussed some more proverbs with definition .

(i)    A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains

        Definition:- Patience is more precious than intelligence .

(ii)    A happy heart is better than a full purse

        Definition:- Happiness is better than wealth .

(iii)    A heavy purse gives to a light heart

         Definition:- When you have money you feel more cheerful and          secure .

(iv)    A hedge between keeps friendship green 

        Definition:- It is important to respect the privacy of others .

(v)    A hungry belly has no ears 

        Definition:- A hungry person is totally concentration on their              need for food and nothing else interests them .

(vi)    A hungry wolf is fixed to no place

        Definition:- A desperate person will go from place to place                  when they need to satisfy their needs .

(vii)    A lender nor borrower be

        Definition:- Do not lend or borrow money .

(viii)    A leopard cannot change its spots 

          Definition:- It is impossible for a bad or unpleasant person to              become good or pleasant .+

(ix)    A lie begets a lie

        Definition:- Telling one lie will lead you to tell another one .

(x)    A little of what you fancy does you good

        Definition:- It's ok to give into a little temptation occasionally .

(xi)    A loaded wagon makes no noise

        Definition:- Really wealthy people do not talk about money .

(xii)    A loveless life is living death

        Definition:- Without affection, life is difficult .

(xiii)    A man can die but once

        Definition:- If death comes now, you will not have to                        experience it later .

(xiv)    A man is as old as he feels himself to be

        Definition:- Your age doesn't matter as long as you are fit and            healthy .

(xv)    A man is judged by his deeds, not by his words

        Definition:- A person is judged on what he/she actually does,              not on what they say they will do .

(xvi)    A man is known by the company he keeps 

        Definition:- A person's character is judged by the type of                    people with whom they spend their time .

(xvii)    A monkey in silk is a monkey no less 

        Definition:- No matter how someone dresses, it's the same                  person underneath .

(xviii)    A new broom sweeps clean(but the old brush knows all                  the corners

          Definition:- A newly-appointed person often makes changes                quickly .

(xix)    A picture paints a thousand words 

          Definition:- A picture is better than a long description .

(xx)    A problem shared is a problem halved/A worry shared is a             worry halved

        Definition:- It is easier to deal with a problem when you                      discuss it with someone .

(xxi)    A rising tide lifts all boats

        Definition:- Refers to something that will be helpful to all .

(xxii)    A rolling stone gathers no moss 

        Definition:- If a person keeps moving from place to place, they          gain neither friends nor possessions .  

(xxiii)    A rotten apple spoils the barrel 

        Definition:- A dishonest or immoral person can have a bad                  influence on a group .

(xxiv)    A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner

        Definition:- Overcoming adversity leads to competence 

(xxv)    A soft answer turneth away wrath

        Definition:- If your reply is polite and tactful you will avoid                anger .

(xxvi)    A stitch in times saves nine

         Definition:- If you deal with a problem at an early stage you               will save time and prevent it from getting worse .
